“It appears that things have stalled, and this is not good for the country, as serious efforts must be made to get to the bottom of it.”
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Wanita Umno chief Rafidah Aziz, dubbed the Iron Lady in her time for being unusually outspoken, warned in a Merdeka Facebook posting that the RM42 billion 1MDB scandal, for one, hangs like the proverbial “Sword of Damocles”.
She demanded to know what has happened to the investigations into the dubious debts chalked up within five years by 1MDB, the government-owned company touted as a strategic investment and development arm. “It appears that things have stalled,” lamented Rafidah. “This is not good for the country.”
“There must be serious efforts to get to the bottom of it.”
The investigation into 1MDB must include the RM2.6 billion found in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal accounts, she added. “Why the donation? Who benefited? “
“The issue certainly highlights the fact that money politics in the country has reached a new high.”
She pointed out that the people have so far rejected all the “incredulous” explanations given by the government side on the RM2.6b controversy. “The issue has in fact become a sore point among the people. The explanations have raised even more questions.”
Rafidah noted, in a related observation, that it does not help if reference is made to global economic problems and the contagion effect while good governance of the country was lacking at the same time. “The confidence of the private sector in the country will be eroded if they cannot find support and co-operation from the government, more so because it’s bogged down by various scandals.”
She urged the government to maintain continuous interaction with all levels of businesses so that the private sector would remain interested in the country and continue to invest to generate economic growth.
